LSCE-FFNN-v1: a two-step neural network model for the reconstruction of surface ocean pCO(2) over the global ocean ArchiMer
Denvil-sommer, Anna; Gehlen, Marion; Vrac, Mathieu; Mejia, Carlos.
A new feed-forward neural network (FFNN) model is presented to reconstruct surface ocean partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) over the global ocean. The model consists of two steps: (1) the reconstruction of pCO(2) climatology, and (2) the reconstruction of pCO(2) anomalies with respect to the climatology. For the first step, a grid-ded climatology was used as the target, along with sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), chlorophyll a (Chl a), mixed layer depth (MLD), as well as latitude and longitude as predictors. For the second step, data from the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) provided the target. The same set of predictors was used during step (2) augmented by their anomalies. During each step, the...

Ocean Circulation Drives the Variability of the Carbon System in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic ArchiMer
Lefèvre, Nathalie; Mejia, Carlos; Khvorostyanov, Dmitry; Beaumont, Laurence; Koffi, Urbain.
The carbon system in the eastern tropical Atlantic remains poorly known. The variability and drivers of the carbon system are assessed using surface dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity (TA) and fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) measured in the 12° N–12° S, 12° W–12° E region from 2005 to 2019. A relationship linking DIC to temperature, salinity and year has been determined, with salinity being the strongest predictor. The seasonal variations of DIC, ranging from 80 to 120 mol kg−1, are more important than the year-to-year variability that is less than 50 mol kg−1 over the 2010–2019 period. DIC and TA concentrations are lower in the northern part of the basin where surface waters are fresher and warmer. Carbon supply dominates over biological carbon uptake...

Phytoplankton Diversity in the Mediterranean Sea From Satellite Data Using Self-Organizing Maps ArchiMer
El Hourany, Roy; Abboud-abi Saab, Marie; Faour, Ghaleb; Mejia, Carlos; Crepon, Michel; Thiria, Sylvie.
We present a new method to identify phytoplankton functional types (PFTs) in the Mediterranean Sea from ocean color data (GlobColour data in the present study) and AVHRR sea surface temperature. The principle of the method is constituted by two very fine clustering algorithms, one mapping the relationship between the satellite data and the pigments and the other between the pigments and the PFTs. The clustering algorithms are constituted of two efficient self-organizing maps, which are neural network classifiers. We were able to identify and estimate the percentage of six PFTs: haptophytes, chlorophytes, cryptophytes, Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, and diatoms. We found that these PFTs present a peculiar variability due to the complex physical and...
